Captain Hall purchased the land in 1895. As he started building his home, he discovered a rich vein of gold ore and soon attempted to start a mining operation. The city halted his project and would not allow a mine just one block form the public square. Captain Hall finished his home and used it for living quarters, barn and storage until he moved to Atlanta.
In 1922, Henry and Bessie Smith purchaed the property and turned their home into an Inn with some "world-famous" family style meals.
